58st and a £500,000 bill: But I deserve NHS support says world's fattest man

Lying in his reinforced bed, 58-stone Keith Martin yesterday defended the estimated £50,000 a year he costs the taxpayer – by comparing himself to others who receive help, such as smokers or injured rock climbers.

Believed to be the world’s fattest man, the bed-bound 42-year-old cannot even roll over on his own.

He is visited by seven carers a day, who wash and change him in two shifts, plus two nurses every other day who tend to his bed sores.

Despite the huge drain on public funds, Mr Martin, who has been unable to work for more than a decade, said: ‘It’s either that or I would end up dead. Until people have lived like it, they can’t judge.

"Some people need help. Smokers get help, rock climbers get help if they get injured. Some people have bigger problems than others. "

‘I am trying to get my weight down. Hopefully it won’t be too long.’

He was a normal weight and used to enjoy cycling until his mother, Alma, died when he was 16. Then he began binge eating and drinking, and started to balloon from 12 stone to his current life-threatening proportions.
‘I let myself go,’ he said. ‘It wasn’t comfort eating, I just didn’t care. I got so bloated on sausages, bacon and roast dinners. I just ate whatever I felt like.’

His parents had separated when he was small. One of eight children growing up in Hendon, he rarely saw his father, Henry, a hospital porter, who passed away within a couple of years of his mother.

The teenage Keith left school soon after his mother’s death with a few CSEs and worked as a warehouseman and labourer until his weight, and the resultant lack of mobility and breathlessness, made it impossible.

Ultrasound proves reality star Coco's buttocks are real

ICE T's wife Coco has long been the butt of jokes about her ample derriere but the reality star has undergone an ultrasound examination to put rumours that her bottom is surgically-enhanced behind her.

The 32-year-old underwent the procedure on popular US TV show The Doctors yesterday to "set the record straight once and for all" that her derriere had not been fitted with implants or injected with fillers.

Plastic surgeon and television talk show host Dr Andrew Ordon applied ultrasonic gel to the star's rear, before pointing out subcutaneous tissue, fat and Coco's glute muscles on the ultrasound screen.

The medic then asked the audience: "Are you ready?" before declaring; "Coco's buttocks are 100 per cent real."

10 Fun and Crazy Places to Do The Grown Up - Cosmopolitan

10. In the laundry room: 29% -  We recommend sitting on the washer instead of the dryer. When the spin cycle starts, let loose with your guy.

9. In your parents' bedroom: 34% -   Ask your guy ahead of time to refrain from any phrases like "Who's your daddy?" That's just too close to home for this setting.
8. In a tent: 37% -  Since you're screened in and the tent walls may be flimsy, we suggest you keep your sex positions simple.

7. At a park: 42% -  We'll leave you to your own devices for this one. Just be courteous and wipe down the swing when you're done!

6. On the kitchen table: 48% -  That spatula isn't just for flippin' burgers. Swat your guy's butt with it to make this romp even more playful.

5. In the woods: 49% -  Your two biggest risks are bugs and poison ivy. To fend off bugs, spray yourself with insect repellent beforehand…just not on your neck, breasts, or anywhere else your man may kiss or lick. As for poison ivy, remember: If there are leaves of three, let it be.

4. In the pool or a body of water: 54% -   Ironically, water gymnastics can actually dry up your natural lubrication. Use a silicone-based lube (which is waterproof)

3. In your childhood bedroom: 65% -  If your parents are in the next room, keep quiet with the fun time... position that is still ultra-pleasurable but won't shake the headboards.

2. In a car: 80% -  People often think the backseat is best for car gymnastics. But there's not much leg room. Recline the passenger seat instead.

1. In the shower or bathtub: 82% -  Take turns lathering each other up and teasing yourselves into a frenzy before going all the way. Have two, warm fluffy towels handy — or one big one that you can wrap yourselves in.

New Type of Alien Planet Is a Steamy 'Water world'

Scientists have discovered a new type of alien planet — a steamy waterworld that is larger than Earth but smaller than Uranus.
The standard-bearer for this new class of exoplanet is called GJ 1214b, which astronomers first discovered in December 2009. New observations by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope suggest that GJ 1214b is a watery world enshrouded by a thick, steamy atmosphere.
"GJ 1214b is like no planet we know of," study lead author Zachory Berta of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., said in a statement. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water."
Adding to the diversity
To date, astronomers have discovered more than 700 planets beyond our solar system, with about 2,300 more "candidates" awaiting confirmation by follow-up observations.
These alien planets are a diverse bunch. Astronomers have found one planet as light and airy as Styrofoam, for example, and another as dense as iron. They've discovered several alien worlds that orbit two suns, like Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine in the "Star Wars" films. [The Strangest Alien Planets]
But GJ 1214b, which is located 40 light-years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), is something new altogether, researchers said.
This so-called "super-Earth" is about 2.7 times Earth’s diameter and weighs nearly seven times as much as our home planet. It orbits a red-dwarf star at a distance of 1.2 million miles (2 million kilometres), giving it an estimated surface temperature of 446 degrees Fahrenheit (230 degrees Celsius) — too hot to host life as we know it.
Scientists first reported in 2010 that GJ 1214b's atmosphere is likely composed primarily of water, but their findings were not definitive. Berta and his team used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to help dispel the doubts.
Hubble watched as GJ 1214b crossed in front of its host star, and the scientists were able to determine the composition of the planet's atmosphere based on how it filtered the starlight.
"We’re using Hubble to measure the infrared color of sunset on this world," Berta said. "The Hubble measurements really tip the balance in favor of a steamy atmosphere."
Berta and his colleagues report their results online in the Astrophysical Journal.
A watery world
Since astronomers know GJ 1241b's mass and size, they're able to calculate its density, which turns out to be just 2 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc). Earth's density is 5.5 g/cc, while that of water is 1 g/cc.
GJ 1214b thus appears to have much more water than Earth does, and much less rock. The alien planet's interior structure is likely quite different from that of our world.
"The high temperatures and high pressures would form exotic materials like 'hot ice' or 'superfluid water,' substances that are completely alien to our everyday experience," Berta said.
GJ 1214b probably formed farther out from its star, where water ice was plentiful, and then migrated in to its current location long ago. In the process, it would have experienced more Earth-like temperatures, but how long this benign phase lasted is unknown, researchers said.
Because GJ 1214b is so close to Earth, it's a prime candidate for study by future instruments. NASA'sJames Webb Space Telescope, which is slated to launch in 2018, may be able to get an even better look at the planet's atmosphere, researchers said.

Adele Gives "One Finger Salute".

Singer Adelehad the tabloid press up in arms on Wednesday and TV executives running for cover over a middle finger gesture after her moment in the sun at British pop's biggest awards was cut short for programming reasons.
The 23-year-old was midway through an acceptance speech at the packed O2 Arena in her native London after picking up the big prize -- best British album for her chart-conquering "21".
But because the show was running late, and being broadcast live onITV, presenter James Corden stepped in to cut Adele short, prompting the "one finger salute".
The Sun newspaper, Britain's best-selling daily, had a picture of the gesture on its front page above the headline "Someone dislikes you", a reference to her hit "Someone Like You".
The rival Mirror featured a similar image accompanied by the words "Adele: Go to hell!"
Speaking backstage after the two-hour show, Adele said she was upset by the interruption.
"I flipped the finger but it wasn't to my fans," she told the Sun. "I'm sorry if I offended anyone, it was the suits that offended me."
The incident comes weeks after U.S. television network NBC and the NFL apologized for an offensive finger gesture made by British rapper M.I.A. during singer Madonna's televised show at the Super Bowl.
Madonna slammed M.I.A.'s behavior as juvenile, negative and out of place.
APOLOGIES ALL ROUND
Both ITV and the BRIT Awards issued apologies following the show, which ended on a sour note after what had been another triumphant night for Adele.
Fresh from her record-equaling six-Grammy haul in the United States earlier this month and return to live performing after surgery on her vocal cords late last year, Adele bagged two BRITs -- best British female and best British album.
"Nothing makes me prouder than coming home with six Grammys, then coming to the BRITs and winning album of the year," she said to loud cheers after winning the album prize, considered the most important.
"I'm so proud to be British and to be flying the flag and I'm so proud to be in the room with all of you." At that point she was cut short, prompting boos in the crowd.
There was some good news for TV bosses -- audience ratings showed a peak viewing figure of 7.4 million, the highest in seven years. The average audience was 6.2 million.
Yet some critics felt the night was more about "suits" -- corporate executives focusing on record sales and viewing figures -- than music.
Performers included Adele with "Rolling In the Deep", Ed Sheeranwith "Lego House" and Coldplay with "Charlie Brown".
Andy Gill of the Independent newspaper called the awards "perhaps the dreariest two hours that TV viewers have sat through in decades."
He wrote in his review that every award winner was predictable and many performers, including Coldplay, Florence + The Machine and Noel Gallagher, were dull.
Rihanna livened up proceedings when she emerged from a transparent box smeared in paint, while Adele and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran put others to shame, Gill said.
Sheeran, a 21-year-old who sang accompanied by an acoustic guitar, was the other big winner on the night, scooping the British breakthrough and British male solo categories.
Both he and Adele have been disparagingly referred to as the "New Boring" in British pop, although they are selling plenty of records which will cheer an industry in decline for the best part of a decade.
In its 52nd week of release ending February 19, Adele's 21 album had its largest U.S. sales week with 730,000 albums sold, more than the previous high of 399,000 copies in the week ending December 25, 2011, according to industry benchmark Nielsen SoundScan.
The record has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.
